Avast32 v. Bugbare, Tue Nov 12 2002
Reviewed By: Peter M

After trying AVG, Antivir and Avast all allowed my computer to function better and faster than with Norton. Avast has the better interfaces and is much easier to configure. The big one was that Avast detected the Bugbare virus on my computer but the others hadn't. I use Avast32, Outpost Firewall (so easy to configure and V.Catch (email antivirus, does not conflict with other running antivirus programs) . All freeware!

A mix of godd & not so good features.
I compared this program with Antivir free edition. Avast doesn't up-date as frequently and also missed a virus that Antivir detected. Avast! checks e-mail by altering the digital address it is directed through. When I un-installed it,it left the digital address altered, so my e-mail didn't work - so I had to look-up the correct 'DNS' addresses and alter them back, to correct the problem!

very good and free
I paid 60 bucks for Mc Afee antivirus, all it did it slowed down my computer so much to the point that it finally froze, I got rid of it and tried Avast4home edition, it is light, doesn't take much resources, runs smoothly, easy to configure, automatic updates are fast and unobtrusive and all this is free. I run it with sygate personal firewall and since then, no virus or worm infected my machine. I can't tell about their support because I never had any bugs to report. Sometimes, free stuff can be even better than the big greedy hungry huge companies. Avast does exactly what it says it does, no fuss no muss.
I had it for a year now and it has benn trouble free. The idea to charge for corporate or professional use so the little guy can breathe is just great I just hope they keep doing it.

regards

Presently My Favorite AntiVirus Software
My Norton Antivirus (2002) was destroyed in a system failure and I could not resurrect it from the original disk. I intended to replace it with whatever product was rated as “best.” To my surprise, I saw enthusiastic reviews for a free product – Avast! I did not believe it would be as protective as the major brands, so I installed it as a temporary measure until I found the best antivirus program. That was four months ago and I have not had a single virus problem while various viruses and worms have infected my friends and coworkers’ computers. This week, Sasser infected all our office machines (running McAfee) but not my home computer (running Avast!).

Great slim antivirus program. Less than 600 registry entries compared to over 5000 on the majority of other antivirus programs. Been working on computers for 20 years and AVAST is NOT BLOATWARE.

Brilliant antivirus software that does not hog system resources. Works away silently in the background and updates itself regularly without any fuss. In my opinion avast puts expensive market leaders to shamewith its simplicity and efficiency. Download it today!, and thank you alwil

Does better than AVG or AntiVir in Virus Bulletin tests, Mon Aug 25 2003

Assuming the virus definitions and performance are the same between the free/professional versions, Avast does better than the other two free alternatives (AVG or AntiVir) in the Virus Bulletin tests (www.virusbulletin.com)

An excellent addition to your AV arsenal. I use AVAST! in conjunction with a small router to protect my home network and I have absolutely no problems. The bugs are minimal compared to Norton, McAfee and Trend MS.

avast! 4 Home Edition, Wed Jan 07 2004
Reviewed By: Penn

The setup on this program is great with the email scanner pulling all POP3 email programs up including Eudora and Pegasus -- and even pulling identities up within them. However it only provides for one SMTP and one POP, so if you use multiple ISP's like I do with multiple email configurations within my identities, this could be a hassle.

However my main gripes are 1> that the free edition does not have a scan-on-demand option and 2> it automatically looks for updates whenever I connect to the Internet, while I would prefer to manually tell it to look when I want it to, rather than having it "make connections behind my back."

If there was a scan-on-demand option and the updates could be set to be manual, I'd not be trying AVG.
