Iolo Antivirus....who ever used my sacred name to write up lawsuits comments and stuff...not cool....NOT cool.... whoever the poser was that is not my personal I am the REAL Topete

I have System Mechanic 9.0. The system fails to download upgrades or updates to virus defintions. I have tried to resolve with technical staff (grade school at best) and have had no luck in resolving issues. DON'T waste your time or money.

OK. Like others here my Iolo System shield which integrates with System Mechanic to become Sytem Mechanic Pro would not download anti virus definition files. As others also pointed out, Iolo support is excrement so after not hearing back and multiple contacts for 3 days, I did some troubleshooting and fixed it myself. Here is what I did, my OS is Windows 7.

1. Installed a freeware program "What's Running" so I could see what Iolo runs resident.

2. Two files came up - Iolo FileInfoList Service and Iolo System Service

3. Using Win7's System configuration Utility I cleared the load on bootup checkbox.

4. Rebooted and ran System Mechanic and checked off on upgrade now. It worked and now I can update my virus/malware definition files!

Then I went to the properties section for both SM & SS & set then to always run as
Administrator just to be sure.

Joy! I now have full functionality!

I note though that Iolo System Shield has no right click shell extension so one may click on a particular folder or file to do a quick virus scan. One must use the Hammer and Tongs method of choosing from the scans pickbox in the Anti Virus program itself to scan a file or folder.

Well, not the best SW but at least it is now functioning normally.

I suppose for $15 for the 1st year for 3 seats I cannot complain too much.... : (

Pretty crap-tacular. Mediocore to poor at best. Actually slowed down my computer both in start up and Processing time. Then the "W32/Backdoor2.EMEB" problem, this is a legit MS file a FTP file that Iolo wants to delete as a virus. Buy something else

it work,easily identify what's going in and out of the system. if u get to know the functionability,it works perfectly well.

The ratings here are already so low, one more won't change much. I had actually liked some features of the product, enough to upgrade from v8 to v9. I want to warn people that v9 no longer includes a firewall!! I've already confirmed with Tech Support that this is true, and not just user ignorance or error on my part. I also agree with the class action lawsuit guy about the way they take away your retail package rights and switch you into a subscription without warning.

i tried to plut the iolo antivirus in my computer and got a blue scren,and my webroot told me it was a malware thank you webroot.The second i took this program off my computer my windows started updating.

Like most in this place, I purchased Iolo's System Mechanic 6 Professional. At that time a fully functional "package" firewall, antivirus etc. In it's original disclosures there were NO declarations advising us, the consumers that we were purchasing 'A SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE' for any given period. Somehow, Iolo switched our product without our consent by "sneaking" in their NEW product which requires a "paid subscription" in one of the convenient "automatic updates". In essence they changed the PROGRAM which we had purchased and had reasonable expectations to continue to function UNDER THE ORIGINAL License. If we can spread the word about this we might have a good class action lawsuit against Iolo for breach of contract. They in effect disabled a working product to gain financially. As for me and anyone I come into contact I strongly warn and dissuade anyone from purchasing Iolo's products.

I encountered the problem of updating the virus definitions also. At the same time I was having a problem installing Vista Service Pack 1. I removed the System Mechanic from my computer and immediately the Service Pack 1 was successfully installed. Iolo has been of no help.

I have recently encountered this problem myself. I usually by the cd in stores but I figured I would buy online as it would be cheaper to do so. Now I am unable to update my virus definitions for the antivirus and have had contact with the morons at iolo who have TRIED to help. All I wanted was a manual link to download the virus definitions so I can have an up to date pc since I paid money for it. But heaven forbid that.

What is an antivirus program worth which cannot detect a virus in progress? And what is tech support worth that will not respond to emails, and only punts when you finally get them on the phone? That is my experience, so my advise is to save your time & money, and try another product like Ad-Aware -- Free, and it solved the problem!

IOLO ANTIVIRUS IS A RIP OFF AND WOULD NOT ADVISE ANYONE TO USE IT. I PURCHASED IT IN JUNE OF THIS YEAR, 2008. I CAN NO LONGER DOWNLOAD VIRUS DEFINITAIONS AND WHEN I DID LOOK AT MY DEFINITIONS THAT HAD DOWNLOAD, THEY WERE FROM 2005 AND THIS IS 2008.

HORRIBLE, non-existent tech support. System will not update, crashed internet. Sent snapshots, case escalated, one month chasing this problem STAY AWAY FROM IOLO - bad off shore phone answering, no solutions!
