Manage Notes and Data with Notational Velocity
Notational Velocity is a simple note taking application for Mac OS. Developers created it with one goal in mind – to store text notes. If you are someone who needs more than that, then maybe this is not the right software for you.
On the other hand, Notational Velocity boasts of one important feature – speed.
Compared to other notes application, Notational Velocity offers a quick way to create new and search for existing notes by using just one text box. Once you type something on the search box and the application finds the same text in the saved notes, it will show the specific note. If it cannot find anything, nothing will appear on your screen. However, hitting the return key will allow you to create and edit a new note. And this happens in a few seconds!
This minimalist application is perfect not only for creating texts and code snippets; it is also great for saving things and tasks that you need to remember, to-do’s and passwords. All notes are saved in one database that can be set with password for added security. Although you may also use the text files storage method if you prefer to have your notes be searchable using Spotlight.
With Notational Velocity, text tags may be added to your notes, which may be utilized for attaching search strings that does not belong to the body text. If you want to use this option, you need to enable it from the preferences window.
Incremental Search – Searching includes all notes’ content and happens automatically as each key is pressed.
Transparent Encryption – data is encrypted and compressed (option needs to be enabled) before it is saved to disk
Modeless Operation – searching for notes is not an additional action but instead is the primary interface.
External Access – synchronize with Simplenote or through files with Dropbox or WriteRoom for iPhone.
Mouseless Interaction – the application’s window wa designed for keyboard input above all else, and thus has no buttons.
What’s new in this version:
* Completely and expertly localized into French
* Unsynchronized changes are detected and handled more reliably upon quitting
* Properly handles receiving corrupt JSON data
* File extensions (for separate-files storage) are always hidden upon saving
* Copy/paste now works with the Dvorak – Qwerty CMD keyboard layout
* Fixed a sync bug: newly created notes would remain if the deletion occurred too soon
As a final point, although National Velocity serves only one purpose, I must say that it does it extremely well. Download this note taking application if you have the need to save and search notes regularly.
