First. Total Commander is a commercial application, and despite the fact that there are enough levers to bypass solution, that does not change anything.

Second. Author of Total Commander has publicly stated intention not to develop a clone for Linux, users of this environment being forced to turn to alternatives like Midnight Commander, Krusader and Gnome Commander.

Thus was born the idea of a manager, a completely free file manager available on both Linux and Windows. Koblov Alexander (author, core developer) has shaped the idea and together with other enthusiasts like Przemyslaw Nagay (core developer) has released Double Commander.

What does Double Commander?

First, Double Commander boasts an interface very similar to Total Commander from this point of view, the most faithful clone that I had the opportunity to test. Panel are on two sides (left – right), whose reversal is done by Ctrl + U, and each panel allows ( like Total Commander or FreeCommander) several tabs.  Can be activated with Ctrl + T.

Double Commander offers the ability to copy, move, delete or rename files or directories. Selection is done using the INSERT key, right-click. In addition, you can create / verify check sums like MD5 or SHA-1.

Allows quick access to system folders, control panel, the start menu or some useful applications that can be chosen at your will.  DOS window or terminal. Cab be activated by pressing F9.  Support for archive type files, which are supported: ZIP, TAR GZ, TGZ and BZ2, RPM, DEB or CPIO.

Integrated Viewer (accessible via key F3) mode allows hex, binary or text format. Also, Double Commander benefits from an integrated editor (F4) in recognition of syntax, but you can define your own external applications for viewing and editing.  Advanced search options (Alt + F7), Total Commander model. Also from there is also inspired the multiple renaming tool, accessible via Ctrl + M.  Double Commander allows pasting, linking files of the same type (function linker) and breaking them in accordance with certain fixed sizes (Floppy, CD, zip drive) using the splitter function.

Plugins for Total Commander (WCX – Specific plugins arhivatoarelor, WFX – plugins system, WDX – content plugins, DSX – search plugins, that WLX – visualization plugins) are compatible with Double Commander.
