I switched from Norton to AntiVir PE when my annual Norton upgrade license ran out.

AntiVir runs pretty lean (not too much resources) and it gets updated VERY frequently which is great.

The only drawback is the aweful upgrade process which has a MANY more required mouseclicks and screens than necessary:

1. right click the AntiVir tray icon
2. select 'start internet update'
3. select 'start' just to see new info
4. select another button to update
5. select another button to quit AntiVir & install new updates
6,7,8... go thru the installation/update process just as if this was a BRAND NEW INSTALL--meaning it'll ask you if you want to create desktop icons, etc.

So all in all, a great product that forces the user to do a lot of extra work (which can confuse the first-time updater) just to keep the product current.

IMHO, a few days worth of programming should be all it would take for them to streamline this process. Until then, the product doesn't seem as polished as competitors like Norton and McAfee.

German Engineering At It's Best
If there ever was an example of good, sound German Engineering, AntiVIR is it... I've used every "Top-Ten" antivirus program available and AntiVIR gets my vote for "Number-One". This program has detected Trojans & Viruses all the others missed, even finding them in Archived-Files as well. In the two years I've been using it, all my computers have NEVER been infected and I do quite a lot of P2P file sharing, E-Mail and IRC on my broadband connection. I've even been able to warn others, who rely on the "Other" antivirus programs, that they were inadvertently sharing an infected file. AntiVIR is also non-intrusive as far as it's use of system resources and as EZ-as-ABC to use. There are constant updates, sometimes as many as 2 per week! They are always looking for ways to improve it and MOST importantly, they LISTEN to their users. The website is also very informative. I've recommended AntiVIR to everyone I know and they ALL use it now... The entire package is "FREE", and even if it wasn't, I'd gladly pay for it. Need I say more? Judging by the length of this review, maybe I shouldn't...lol.

Very efficient, I continue to use it since more than one year with the great satisfaction to be protected.
Only 1 (BIG) problem : against certain viruses, Antivir works under MSDOS, and the options are... in German ! I can speak englis, french, spanish, but not german ! And I must make my choice in "blind mode". I am surprised : I seem to be alone to complain with this...

I honestly have nothing bad to say about this program. For personal computer usage, it has done its job nicely, I install it on all my friend's systems as well. Give it a try!

It the best antivir i have used in years!!!! & it's free. simple interface very good detection and no slowdown of machine! Avoid Panda, Norton.....

First of all it isn't Norton or McAfee...and next it's free. I am not a high end user, so I remain uncertain about basic things like email protection and automatic updates (I do them manually)...which may go to clarity of the operating instructions...but on two different machines which had formerly used either McAfee or Norton, this tool found 40 or 50 viruses. So I think it's a solid product. The software is unintrusive and performent.

Quick user change of WINXP Bug Fix, Sat Jun 14 2003

Hi all,
I've checked this with new 6.20.x.x (this is the version of the program which is updated along with the Virus Definition File very regular). AVGuard is working fine using fast user switching of WINXP. There are no problems. When I switch to the second user (user rights) AVGuard is working and I can use it like for the first profile (admin rights) so therefore, happy-dappy the Bug is fixed :-)

I like this antivirus (it's free;). It has one minor bug: if you run xp/2000 and 2 users log, one user get's a warning that the antivirus can't load (one user already has it loaded).
