The mighty hath fallen

I have been a longtime customer of Eset's NOD32 Antivirus product. Although version 2 had an overly complex and poorly translated interface, it was unrivaled in terms of speed, resource usage, and detection rates. It also was one of the earliest AV products to support 64-bit operating systems. Version 3 retained the assets that made version 2 excellent and changed the interface to be much more intuitive and attractive.
With version 4, Eset seems to have taken many steps backward. The product has unneccessary feature bloat. For instance it tells me when there are Windows updates available that I have not installed. Thanks Eset, but Windows already is telling me the same thing! Plus it nags you to install optional updates as well as the recommended ones and I hate that. It has a new feature called SysRescue which is interesting in that it is a bootable CD that allows you to scan the computer offline, while rootkits cannot hide virus-related files and registry keys. However I can never get it to work. It always locks up between 60% and 70% of the way through the scanning process.
THe worst part about version 4 is that the scanning engine hangs all the time. It will show that it is scanning the same file for days or weeks if you let it. I've tried putting in support requests for this, but all they do is refer me to an article they have that does not solve the issue. That is after I wait several days for a response of any kind. Sometimes I don't even get a response. It is atrocious.
I used to be gung-ho about Eset's AV product, even taking steps at the consulting firm I work for to get us to become a resller of their products. But in the end it looks like the program is simply not worth deployment because it causes more headaches than it prevents.

ABOUT NOD32
Reviewed by: FRYAN, Mon Mar 09 2009
I HAVE USE NOD32 SINCE LONG TIME, FOR OLD VERSION I THINK NOD32 GOOD FOR VIRUS/TROJAN BETWEN NORTON/NORMAN/AVG BECAUSE NOD32 HAVE CLEAN. BUT FOR THIS TIME VIRUS DIFFERENT THAAN BEFORE, MANY MODIFIELD OR NEW VIRUS ATTACK COMPUTER AND NETWORK.
NOD32 POSSIBLE TO: 1. CLEAN VIRUS WITHOUT DELETING OR CARANTINE TRUE FILE, FOR VIRUS INJECTING FILES LIKE ALMAN, VARITE, SALITY, AND VARIANT
2. NOD32 ABLE TO BLOCK ARP POISONING/ ARP SPOOLING AS LIKE KBU INJECT, MICROSOFT INJECT, ETC.
3. NOD32 NOT TAKE HIGH MEMORY IN STARTING UP, BUT IN CONDITIONS SCANNED FILES, WILL TAKE HIGHT MEMORY, TAKE CARE HANG UP.
4. CAN RESCAN QUEARANTINE SOO WILL PERFECT AT SCAN FILES.
BUT INSIDE POSSIBLE ACTION, I FOUND SOME DISADVANTAGES (NOD32 IMPOSIBLE TO DO THIS:)
1. CAN'T SCAN FILES INSIDE MORE THAN 2 HIDDEN FILES, EXAMPLE: (FILE HIDDEN)/(FILE HIDDEN)/FILE VIRUS.EXE; NOD32 CAN'T SCAN THAT VIRUS FILES.
2. FOR ARP SPOOLING ONLY CAN BLOCK, NOT DELETE VIRUS FILES. THIS IS DISADVANTAGES IF NOD32 NOT ACTIVE , ARP SPOOLING STILL ATTACK. ABOUT ARP SPOOLING/POISONING YOU CAN SEARCH AT GOOGLE.
3. ALTHOUGHT NOD32 CAN DETECTED ALMAN AND VARIANT, IT NOT SOLVE FULLY AFTER YOU OPEN QUEARANTINE AND DELET FILE WHICH INFECTED BY VIRUS. IF YOU STILL OPEN FILE BEFORE DELETE VIRUS AT QUARANTINE. VIRUS STILL CAN ATTACK.
4. NOD32 DIDN'T HAVE AUTO CLOSE DETECTED ALERT, SOO YOU SHOULD CHECK 1 BY 1,, CAN'T CHECK ALL FILE.
5. LISENSI TOO EXPENSIVE.
6. UNSUPPORT SOME BILLING, THIS DISADVATAGES FOR NETCAFE.

Nod 32
Reviewed by: Warren, Sat May 31 2008
Security Suites are not necessary with Vista. The Vista Firewall and NOD 32 is all the protection you need. It is small and doesn't slow down the PC. I tried two Symantec products and got my money back. I tested McAfee and Microtrend and they too fall far short of Nod 32.
